How to Create Questionnaires for Surveys: General Rules

questionnaires for surveys

Questionnaires are the backbone of all surveys you can think of. Whatever your goal is, whatever the type of research you are doing, you will need to create a questionnaire. A wisely written one will ensure that respondents are invested, and pay attention enough to finish it. On the contrary, a poorly written one will only discourage them.

Today we will gloss over some general rules on how to write surveys. If you are interested, keep reading!

What is a questionnaire?

A questionnaire is a list of questions you compile to collect survey data and feed into your Customer Experience Management strategy. Questionnaires can be large, short, with heavy logic – jumps, conditions – or as simple as one question with yes or no answers. It all depends on the type of survey you want to do and the information you need to collect.

General rules for creating questionnaires + questionnaire questions examples

A goal in mind

Don’t jump into creating a survey, and consequently a questionnaire, if you haven’t determined the goal first. Pinpoint what type of survey you want to conduct, what exactly are you gathering feedback about, etc. Then, work your way up from that point forwards.

Clear and distinct answers and questions.

Separate questions

Now, that you have defined what type of questionnaire you are creating, let’s proceed with questions. A bad practice would be to pack a few questions into one. This forces the respondent to pick one question to answer. This way you are missing out on a bunch of feedback.

2. What is the main reason for your using the app?

Unbiased questions

When working on a survey, make sure you are not imprinting your own opinions on the customer. You want to ask from a completely neutral position and seek to collect only high-quality, real feedback.

Offer a place to leave feedback

Questions with set answers are good – they allow customers to cruise through the questionnaire quickly. This mitigates the bounce rate and helps you gather more data. However, make sure to include one question, where you allow the customer to tell you whatever they feel like. Don’t make it obligatory, but let them express their opinion if they need to. We guarantee that you will find out about issues you never thought existed.

❌ No additional question

✅ Got anything else to say? 🙂

Use good survey software

A good survey software – like Checker – has a built-in feature for questionnaire creation. With such platforms, you will not only be able to create questionnaires of varying difficulty but also collect data through surveys, and easily analyze them afterward. Sounds like a win-win!
